Instead of studying memes as units of cultural evolution, meta-memetics investigates the rules, constraints, and systemic forces that shape whether memes thrive, mutate, or go extinct. This paper formalizes three layers: (1) idea-level behavior, (2) selection dynamics, and (3) structural operators—conceptual mechanisms that generate, bias, and stabilize meme-flow across populations.
1. Introduction — What Meta-Memetics Tries to Explain
Classical memetics asks: why does this idea spread? Meta-memetics asks: what determines the possible shapes ideas can take? It is to memetics what game-design theory is to games: a study of the meta-rules that condition evolution. Meta-memetics models idea-flow as a semiotic ecosystem in which selection pressures are not fixed but produced by social technologies, attention gradients, emotional infrastructures, and symbolic affordances.
